Understanding the NHS Colour Coding System for Cleaning
In healthcare environments, maintaining hygiene and preventing cross-contamination is crucial. The NHS and healthcare settings across the UK adhere to the British Institute of Cleaning Science (BICSc) Colour Coding System, which ensures that cleaning equipment and materials are used appropriately in different areas.
The Colour Coding System:
-
Red – Designated for washrooms, toilets, showers, and bathroom floors. This prevents bacteria from spreading to other areas.
-
Blue – Used in general low-risk areas such as waiting rooms, offices, and corridors.
-
Green – Reserved for kitchens and food preparation areas, maintaining high standards of food hygiene.
-
Yellow – Assigned to clinical areas, treatment rooms, and isolation areas, where infection control is vital.
Following this standardised system helps minimise the risk of cross-contamination and ensures a safe, clean environment for both patients and healthcare staff. By implementing these protocols, healthcare facilities maintain compliance with infection control standards, reinforcing patient safety and public health.
